The original 1997 incarnation of the Pokémon animated television series, known in Japan as Pocket Monsters and internationally as Pokémon the Series: The Beginning (Indigo League and Adventures in the Orange Islands) and Pokémon the Series: Gold & Silver (The Johto Journeys, Johto League Champions and Master Quest) is a Japanese animated television series based on the video game series of the same name created by Satoshi Tajiri, Junichi Masuda and Ken Sugimori. Animated by OLM and produced by TV Tokyo, TV Tokyo MediaNet and Shogakukan Productions, the series premiered on TV Tokyo and its affiliates on April 1, 1997 and ended on November 14, 2002. Internationally, the series was acquired (outside of Japan and Asia) by 4Kids Entertainment around February 1997 and its English dub was announced to be in production around 1998, in the wake of the episode 38 incident dominating international headlines. The dub premiered on local television stations in the US via syndication on September 7, 1998, distributed by The Summit Media Group, before moving to Kids' WB! in 1999 where it ran until 2003.
