The Postimees (lit. Postman) is an Estonian daily newspaper founded by Johann Voldemar Jannsen and first published in Parmu on June the 5th, 1857, as the Perno Postimees ehk Näddalaleht. In 1891, the Postimees became a national newspaper with Jaan Tõnisson as editor in 1896. During the Soviet occupation until 1994, it was known as the Edasi (lit. forward). It is the oldest daily newspaper in Estonia. It is owned by their parent, the Postimees Grupp (formerly Eesti Meedia), a pan-Baltic media company; from 1998 to 2013, it was owned by Norway’s Schibsted ASA, also the publishers of the Aftenposten and the Svenska Dagbladet.
In 1886, Karl August Hermann bought the newspaper from Jannsen; in 1863, the paper moved to Dorpat (Tartu), and renamed the newspaper to the Eesti Postimees (lit. The Estonian Postman)
