Rádio e Televisão Independente (also known as RTI) was the first project of a Portuguese private television channel. This project was made even before SIC (in 1987), TVI and TV1 (both in 1992). RTI tried to apply for a broadcasting license, with the intention to begin its transmissions the following year. They even considered the possibility of reaching households through cable (!). Unfortunately, they eventually hit the same brick wall that SIC and TVI were still trying to crack in the late-1980s: a post-revolution Portuguese law that only allowed the public sector to own TV channels. The project was never released.
