Rai Sport was first named Rai Sport Satellite, was launched on February 1, 1999.

In 2008 there was a name change in Rai Sport Più, pending the start of the stop phase of terrestrial analogue transmissions.

2009–2010[]
At the end of 2009, Rai Sport Più became Rai Sport +.
Rai Sport 1[]
2010–2017[]
On May 18, 2010, on the occasion of the reorganization of the digital channels, the channel became Rai Sport 1, and from the same day it is joined by Rai Sport 2.
Rai Sport[]
2017[]
On February 5, 2017, with the closure of Rai Sport 2, the channel changed its name to Rai Sport, while the HD version became Rai Sport + HD.
2017–present[]
2017–2022[]
Following on from the rebrand of Rai's 4 main channels, Rai Sport along with Rai's many other thematic channels were finally rebranded to match that of Rai 1, 2, 3 and 4 on the 10th April 2017. Despite that Rai Sport 2 was renamed as Rai Sport earlier this year, they've changed their logo colour from yellow to orange and their idents now feature actors on screen representing different types of sport with text showing the name of the sport in Italian (eg. Skiing is Sci in Italian).
2022–present[]
On June 6, 2022, Rai Sport changed its logo colour from orange to blue and unveiled a new graphics package.
