World Movies began broadcasting in October 1995 and coincided with the launch of Foxtel. In May 1998, the channel launched on Optus TV. It was owned and operated by SBS Subscription TV, a subsidiary of SBS.

2011–2018[]
In 2011, the word "channel" was dropped from its name, becoming World Movies. On 3 November 2014, an HD simulcast was launched on Foxtel. On 31 January 2018, Foxtel dropped the channel, and its content was moved to SBS On Demand.
SBS World Movies[]
2019–present[]
On the 6th May 2019, SBS announced that World Movies would be revived as a free-to-air channel in standard and high-definition. The channel went live on the 1st July on Freeview channel 32, replacing an SD simulcast of SBS Viceland, leaving SBS Viceland as an HD-only channel. SBS World Movies also returns to Foxtel in HD on channel 432 and in SD on channel 433.
