In a bid to combat declining ratings, the show is retitled $ale of the New Century and the format is slightly altered. In 2001, the 'New' is dropped from the title and the show returns to a three-contestant format.

The show was ended on 29 November 2001 after 4,610 episodes with plans for the show to return in the latter half of 2002. However, after its replacement Shafted was axed due to poor ratings, plans for the return of $ale of the Century were put on hold.
The show returned in 2005 under the new title Temptation.
