In a bid to combat declining ratings, the show is retitled $ale of the New Century and the format is slightly altered. In 2001, the 'New' is dropped from the title and the show returns to a three-contestant format.

The show is rested on 29 November 2001 with plans for the show to return in the latter half of 2002. But after its replacement Shafted is axed due to poor ratings and replaced by re-runs of Frasier, all plans for Sale are put on hold.
Sale of the Century returned in 2005 under the new title Temptation.
