The Sampoong Department Store was a department store in Seoul, South Korea constructed and owned by Sampoong Engineering & Construction Co. Ltd., opened in 1990. The a large segment of the building collapsed on June 29, 1995, leaving over 500 dead and around 1,000 injured. The disaster was the deadliest non-deliberate modern building collapse until 2013. The events lead to the arrest of several executives at Sampoong Engineering & Construction, and the company eventually went into liquidation and closed down in December 1997 as a result of the tragedy. The remainder building was demolished on October 15, 1998.
