In 1995, the Sampoong Department Store collapsed, becoming the largest peacetime disaster in South Korean history. The collapse was the deadliest non-deliberate modern building collapse until 2013. The disaster lead to key executives of the company being arrested, and the company eventually went into liquidation and closed down in December 1997.
