The team was originally called the Dallas Chaparrals, a basketball team under the American Basketball Association. The logo consisted of a stylized light blue roadrunner with spiky hair and a long beak, running while holding a basketball with its clawed hand used from 1967 to 1970, and again from 1971 to 1973.

In 1970, the team's name was changed to the Texas Chapparrals. The new logo kept the roadrunner, but made a different shade of blue and the basketball's color being red, white and blue. A Black Texas outline and Chaparrals text in red was added to the logo. It would only last for 1 year before reverting back their name and logo to the Dallas Chapparrals.

1973–1989[]

San Antonio Spurs 1973

In 1973, the team's name changed to the San Antonio Gunslingers, though it was changed to the now iconic San Antonio Spurs before the team played for the 1973-1974 ABA season. The new logo features the word "SPURS" in a futuristic, angular, gray typeface on a black background, with a stylized western spur graphic replacing the letter "U". It was used from 1973 to 1976 for the ABA, and continued to be used until 1989 after the NBA absorbed the ABA in 1976, and kept the Spurs as is.

1989–2002[]

San Antonio Spurs 1989

The logo in 1989 added bright background colors in this logo. While it was never used officially on their uniforms, it is better known as the "fiesta colors". The logo was used from 1989 to 2002.

2002–2017[]

SpursLogo2002

The logo was completely redesigned in 2002, with the "SPURS" in a bold, layered black and gray typeface with a stylized spur replacing the "U," arched below the words "SAN ANTONIO" in white. It is all contained within a black, gray, and white arch shape. The logo was used from 2002 to 2017.

2017–present[]

San Antonio Spurs 2017

The current San Antonio Spurs logo features a standalone, stylized western spur graphic rendered in white, gray, and black layers on a black background. The U graphic was retained from the previous logo.
