Saudi Aramco is the state-owned petroleum and natural gas company of Saudi Arabia and historically the biggest contributor to its economy. It was founded in 1933 as the Arabian American Oil Company.

Saudi Aramco was originally trace to the oil shortages of World War I, and the exclusion of American companies from Mesopotamia (present-day Iraq and Saudi Arabia) by the United Kingdom and France under the San Remo Petroleum Agreement of 1920.
