ScotRail began in 1983 as a sub-sector of Provincial.
1989-1997[]
1997-2004[]
The ScotRail sector was privatised in 1997 with National Express being the first operator.
2004-2008[]
The franchise was awarded to First Group in 2004.
2008-present[]
New ScotRail branding was introduced in 2008, the branding will be used regardless of actual train operator. In 2015, Abellio became the operator of ScotRail services, before they lost the contract in April 2022, when the franchise was nationalised by the Scottish Government.
