Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd. (株式会社セブン&アイ・ホールディングス) is a Japanese retail conglomerate based in Chiyoda, Tokyo that owns various retail store chains in the country.
The holding company was formed on September 1, 2005 as part of a restructuring effort from Ito-Yokado. Before the formation, Ito-Yokado was steadily declining, while its subsidiary Seven-Eleven Japan (the Japanese chain of 7-Eleven) was soaring in popularity, causing a parent-child imbalance. To prevent a hostile takeover, Ito-Yokado, Seven-Eleven Japan, and Denny's Japan (which Ito-Yokado also owned) created a new holding company to fix this imbalance, in which all three companies became separate subsidiaries of this new holding company.
