Seven & i Holdings Co., Ltd. (株式会社セブン&アイ・ホールディングス) is a Japanese retail conglomerate based in Chiyoda, Tokyo that owns various retail store chains in the world, mostly native to Japan.
The holding company was formed on September 1, 2005 as part of a restructuring effort from Ito-Yokado. Before the formation, Ito-Yokado was steadily declining, while its subsidiary Seven-Eleven Japan (the Japanese chain of 7-Eleven) was soaring in popularity, causing a parent-child imbalance. To prevent a hostile takeover, Ito-Yokado, Seven-Eleven Japan, and Denny's Japan (which Ito-Yokado also owned) created a new holding company to fix this imbalance, in which all three companies became separate subsidiaries of this new holding company.
