In 2004, following the success of Shrek 2, DreamWorks Animation began working in three more sequels for the Shrek saga. The fifth film was announced in 2007, after the release of Shrek the Third, and it was set to be released in 2013. However, in 2009, DreamWorks announced that Shrek Forever After would be the last film of the series and therefor Shrek V was cancelled.

On July 10, 2024, DreamWorks Animation announced Shrek 5 via X. It was originally scheduled to release on July 1, 2026, before being pushed back to December 23, 2026, but it was delayed again to June 30, 2027.
