In 1978, Simpsons was acquired by the Hudson's Bay Company, which required Simpsons to cut ties with Sears on their partnership. Without the Simpsons' involvement, the chain carried on for a few more years as Simpsons-Sears, before becoming Sears Canada in 1984. The number of Simpsons locations dwindled as HBC also tried to reposition it as a more upscale sister chain to The Bay, to no avail. The chain's operations were merged with The Bay's in 1991.
