In 1996, Organizações Globo, in association with British Sky Broadcasting, alongside News Corporation, and Liberty Media International, launched Sky Net to compete with the newly launched satellite television service DirecTV Brasil.

Sky Brasil, then being a leader in the satellite pay TV market, merged with its largest competitor, DirecTV Brasil, the market deputy leader. After the merger, the company was renamed to Sky+DirecTV.

Sky dropped the DirecTV logo in 2007 and came to be called only as "Sky Brasil". News Corporation sold its participation in the company to DirecTV in the same year.
