Picaboo[]
July–September 2011[]
On July 8, 2011, Snapchat was launched as Picaboo. The original Pictaboo logo consisted of a smiling ghost holding a photo on top of a glossy yellow background, in the style of Apple's famous "skeumorphism" of the era.
Snapchat[]
2011–2013[]
In September 2011, Picaboo was renamed to Snapchat.
June–September 2013[]
In June 2013, the ghost icon lost its face as a part of a large update for the app.
2013–2014[]
In September 2013, the glossy background was replaced with a gradient, and the shadow behind the ghost was removed.
2014–2019[]
At some point between October to November 2014, the gradient was removed, making the background a pure flat yellow.
2019–present[]
On August 8, 2019, the ghost's outline was substantially thickened, which has also led the icon to subtly change shape.
