This is one of three Sonic the Hedgehog titles to be programmed for the Game Gear by Arc System Works.[1] The logo was later used when the game was re-released to the Nintendo 3DS's Virtual Console in Japan on November 14, 2012 and internationally on July 4, 2013.[2][3]

This logo was used for the game's marketing and box art in Europe. Despite this, in-game sprites for the logo are completely unaltered.
