The final logo for Sonic R was seen at E3 1997 event, where playable demo build was shown prior the game's release.[9] The modified "R" wordmark was used in logos of later racing spin-off titles Team Sonic Racing and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

In 1998, Sega PC released Sonic R for CD-ROM based computers with additional visual and gameplay features. There are two PC releases of the game with the first wave of release implementing the software rendering. Due the compatibility issues when running on Windows XP operating systems, Sonic R was re-released for PC in 2004 to use common hardware rendering. This hardware-accelerated PC conversion was also used, when the game was included in Sonic Gems Collection.

The Chinese variant of the logo was only seen used for the game in Sonic Collector's Edition compilation.
