Prior the arcade game's release, the Japanese logo was first seen on the game's exhibition at AOU Show 1996 event.[1] From the game's inclusion in Sonic Gems Collection, this logo became the primary one to be used for the game in future international releases.

In November 2012, the game was re-released as part of Model 2 Collection releases for PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade services. However, the game became unavailable following PlayStation Store's closure in PlayStation 3 on March 29, 2021, as well later being delisted in Xbox Store on December 6, 2024.[3] Currently the game is also playable at the in-game arcades in Lost Judgment and Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name.

In November 2016, Sega Logistics Service announced the discontinuation of maintaining operations for all Sonic the Fighters arcade machines on March 31, 2017.[4][5]
