Typography:  Syntax Ultra Black (modified, "SONIC")

("THE HEDGEHOG")
Launched:  November 7, 1990[1][2](Dreams Come True 1990 tour)

The original Sonic the Hedgehog logo had "O" rotated the counter shape to an inner oval direction with the inner outline resembling a revved-up ball. The letter "C" is nearly identical to "O" with the right side portion being cropped. In original paper print logo, the bottom left corner of "S" had flat curving, that was later sharpened when the digital print variant was introduced during the series' 20th anniversary in 2011.

Originally seen in-game sprite at the playable demo in Tokyo Toy Show 1990 event,[3][4] the primary print logo debuted on the poster and pamphlets for Dreams Come True 1990 live tour in Japan.[1] While the logo was also present at Winter International Consumer Electronics Show 1991 in United States,[5] Sega of America however, switched to using different logo for the game afterwards in said market.

The logo is used primarily in Japan, but different regions such as Europe, Canada, Australia and Asian countries are known to use it as primary or secondary logo.

A different logo with "THE HEDGEHOG" wordmark formed in a bouncy pattern was introduced, when the game was released in United States on June 23, 1991. Although the game's box art in European countries used the Japanese logo, the North American logo was used in adverts and merchandise. The logo was seen sparingly in later re-releases such as Mega-Play arcade port, Arcade Legends Sega Mega Drive plug-&-play units by Radica Games, Sonic Mega Collection, and Sega Vintage Collection port for Xbox Live Arcade.

A renewed logo that existed as part of Sega's internal art assets since 2007, was first seen used briefly for the 2009 mobile release for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices during the Sonic’s 19th Birthday mega sale event.[7] — The mobile release in question used a different logo.

Later used in the series of digital trading cards released by Stampii, this logo became prominently used on May 16, 2013, when Sega of America announced the enhanced mobile remake developed by Christian Whitehead and Headcannon for iOS and Android devices in all regions, including Japan.[8][9]
