Sonic the Hedgehog 2 logo was revealed in May/June 1992 issue of Sega Visions magazine.[1] The base logo uses "SONIC" wordmark from the Japanese logo now with glossy dark blue aesthetic and orange outlines, and red "THE HEDGEHOG" from North American logo of the first Mega Drive game.
The 16-bit Mega Drive game received its worldwide release simultaneously with Tuesday, November 24, 1992 being marketed as "Sonic 2sday" by Sega of America for North American and European releases.[2] A separate game with same name was released for Game Gear and Master System in November of the same year with both games sharing the same logo.

Much like the previous game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in Japan received its standard logo to retain consistency and it has been used for the game's re-releases in said market since. Initially, the logo was also used when the game was exported to Asian markets including South Korea.
The renewed logo was first used for iPhone and iPod Touch port of the Mega Drive game released on April 21, 2010.[3] It was later retained when the mobile port was replaced by enhanced remake developed Christian Whitehead and Headcannon for iOS and Android devices on December 12, 2013. This logo was used in all regions for these mobile device releases, including Japan.
While not initially used, later website assets for the downloadable port in Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Store featured this logo.[4][5] The enhanced port 3D Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for Nintendo 3DS would also feature this logo in western regions, but it was later replaced by Japanese logo when Sega Ages Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was released for Nintendo Switch in all regions.
By using trademarked 'Lock-On Technology' feature, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 can be inserted into a top slot adapter of Sonic & Knuckles cartridge, resulting a alternate version of Sonic 2 starring Knuckles the Echidna as playable character with addition of several gameplay changes. The title screen alters accordingly.
