Sony Pictures Entertainment was founded on December 21, 1987 as Columbia Pictures Entertainment when The Coca-Cola Company spun off Columbia Pictures, and merged it with Tri-Star Pictures. After a brief period of independence with Coca-Cola maintaining a financial interest, the combined studio was eventually acquired by the Japanese company, Sony on November 8, 1989, and renamed Sony Pictures Entertainment on August 7, 1991.
