Spar started out as De Spar; an acronym for Door Eendrachtig Samenwerken Profiteren Allen Regelmatig. "De Spar" also happens to mean "the fir tree" in Dutch, hence the logo depicting a fir tree.

The De Spar brand is still used in Italy and at Lukoil stations in Hungary. In Austria, the De Spar brand is used for its Italian food range.
