Spar started out as De Spar; an acronym for. "De Spar" also happens to mean "the fir tree" in Dutch, hence the logo depicting a fir tree.

In 1960 the first De Spar store was opened in Italy
The De Spar brand is still used in Italy and at Lukoil stations in Hungary. In Austria, the De Spar brand is used for it's Italian food range.
In 1950 the name was shortened to Spar.
Spar's current logo was created by Raymond Loewy, using a stylized version of the fir tree motif.
