Speedway was founded in 1952 as Speedway 79. In 1959, Marathon Petroleum purchased the company and rebranded all the stores to Marathon in 1962.

In 1975, Marathon decided to reintroduce the Speedway name, excluding the "79", as a self-serve gasoline brand.
