1997–2002[]
Square Pictures was a Honolulu-based animation studio owned by Japanese video games company Square (via it subsidiary Square USA) founded in May 1997, in order to produce the fully CGI feature-length movie Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, released in partnership with Columbia Pictures.
Due the box office financial failure of the movie, and thus, giving a massive negative impact on Square's revenues, the studio was closed on March 31, 2002. [1] Afterwards, the company was a consolidated subsidiary of Square Enix's Visual Works, but in recent years, it was put on liquidation, and unlisted from the company's subsidiaries. [2]
