The Star Alliance was founded in 1997 as the world’s first airline alliance. The five pyramids in the logo symbolise the five founding airlines: Air Canada, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, Thai Airways International and United Airlines. Competitors oneworld and SkyTeam were launched in 1999 and 2000, respectively.

The alliance is headquartered in Frankfurt-am-Main, Germany, where German flag carrier and founder-member Lufthansa has its main base. As of 2020, it holds 26 full members from every inhabited continent, making it the largest airline alliance in the world, with the most recent airline to join being Air India in 2014.
