Star Kiran is an Odia-language general entertainment channel in India and Disney Star’s first regional-language channel outside the big six languages (Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Bengali and Marathi). Initially the channel was to be named Star Kirano, but the spelling was changed a few weeks before launch. Its HD version was the first-ever Odia-language HD channel. Its competitors include Tarang, Zee Sarthak, Colors Odia and Sidharth TV.
Originally scheduled to be launched on 24 January 2022, this and other changes were indefinitely postponed, due to a delay in the TRAI’s new tariff rules. In April 2022, Disney Star announced the launch of the channel on 1 June 2022, along with the Marathi movie channel Pravah Picture on 15 May. On 19 May, the channel’s launch day was officially announced as 6 June, and the spelling was changed from Star Kirano to Star Kiran.
