STAR TV (Initially an abbreviation for Satellite Television Asian Region) was launched on 1 August 1990 by Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa (now CK Hutchison Holdings) to become a pan-Asian television network. It later expanded its service into Taiwan, Mainland China, India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

On 1 July 1993, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation purchased 63.6% shares of STAR TV for $525 million, followed by the purchase of the remaining on the same day, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of News Corp.
