STAR TV (Initially an abbreviation for Satellite Television Asian Region) was launched in August 1990 by Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa (now CK Hutchison Holdings) to become a pan-Asian television network. It later expanded its service into Taiwan, Mainland China, India, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia.

In 1992, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation purchased 63.6% shares of STAR TV for $525 million, followed by the purchase of the remaining on 1 January 1993, becoming a wholly-owned subsidiary of News Corp.

Star underwent a corporate rebrand in April 2001 and introduced a new set of logos. The logo scheme of the Star network (the name of the channel next to the Star logo icon, contained within a rectangle with two opposite corners rounded) that had been used throughout 2007.

On 2009, News Corporation restructured Star TV Network by dividing them into three divisions: Star India, which retained Star TV's India channels, Fox International Channels Asia (later Fox Networks Group) in Southeast Asia region, and Star Greater China which comprising all assets in Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. Meanwhile, another division in the Middle East, Star Select was later absorbed into Fox Arabia.

Star Greater China itself later broke-up into Star China Media, which was sold to China Media Capital in 2014 and remaining assets in Hong Kong and Taiwan became a part of Fox Networks Group Asia. Thus, Star TV transformed into a foreign-owned Indian media company.

In April 2011, nearly a year after British design agency venturethree rebranded Star TV’s flagship channel Star Plus, it introduced a new corporate identity for the Star TV network, with Kohinoor as the corporate typeface. The identity was centred on a glowing star, dubbed the ‘Hot Star’. This is not to be confused with the network’s digital streaming service, Hotstar, which was launched in 2015.

From 2013 to 2019, Star India was a part of now-defunct 21st Century Fox after the original News Corporation was split.

On 20 March 2019, The Walt Disney Company completed its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, of which Star India was a fully-owned subsidiary. The Walt Disney Company’s Indian operations were greatly augmented by the acquisition, as Star India, Star’s digital content platform Hotstar and direct-to-home satellite TV operator Tata Sky are now part of the Disney portfolio.
