The first Subway location was owned by the chain's founder Peter Buck and Fred DeLuca, and thus Buck initially marketed the restaurant as Pete's Subway.
1968–2002
Beginning in September 1969, Subway introduced a new logo with the "SUB" becoming white (on the left) and "WAY" becoming yellow (on the right), and a green/black oval was behind it.
2002–2016
2002–2015
In March 2002 when Subway started using a modified version of its 1969 logo, with the oval behind it removed, the typeface changed and the wordmark became italicized. The slogan used with this logo was "Eat Fresh."
2015–2016
On December 28, 2015, Subway introduced a new green-colored version of its 2002 logo, as well as a new slogan, "Founded on Fresh," which was later changed to "Fresh is what we do."
2016–present
To coincide with the opening ceremony of the Rio 2016 Olympic games, on August 5, 2016, Subway unveiled the new design — the first time that the sandwich chain has significantly changed the major element of its identity since 2001. While the old logo utilized a bold, thick font, the new logo is more minimalist. The signature arrows on the "S" and "Y," however, will remain. The logo was adopted internationally in July 2017.
