SunTrust was founded in July 1985 as the holding company of Florida-based Sun Bank and Georgia-based Trust Company Bank.

In January 1995, it was announced that the two banks would adopt the name of their holding company. Originally planned for September 1995, the two banks would rebrand in late October.
