In 1996, after 9 years of the failure of box-office Superman IV: The Quest For Peace, Warner Bros. decided to produce a new Superman movie based on the famous comic book The Dead and Return of Superman titled: "Superman Reborn", but the title changed to "Superman Lives" when Kevin Smith joined the production.

The film was planned to be released on July 4, 1998 and it was to be directed by Tim Burton, produced by Jon Peters, written by Kevin Smith and starred by Nicolas Cage. But in early 1998, due to creative differences, the constant change of script writers and the high budget that required Burton's vision, Warner Bros. took the decision to pause the project for a while and then finally cancelled it in June, 2000.
