Target first opened in 1926 under the name Lindsay's Emporium in Geelong, Victoria.

In 1968, the chain was purchased by Myer Emporium and renamed Lindsay's Target. This wordmark is identical to the wordmark used by Target United States from 1968 to 1972.

In March 1973, "Lindsay's" is dropped from the name and the company is rebranded Target Australia Pty Ltd.
