2011–2015 (corporation), 2013–2015 (stores)[]
On January 13, 2011, Target Corporation bought the lease of about 130 Zellers stores for their then-planned entrance into the Canadian retail market. Their Canadian subsidiary, Target Canada, was officially established that same day. The stores were officially opened on March 5, 2013. The newly opened Canadian stores used the Target logo and branding, which had already been in use in the United States.
On January 15, 2015, Target Canada announced that it would close all of their locations, while Target stores in the United States would remain in business. Shortly after, on January 23, 2015, all Starbucks locations inside Target Canada stores permanently closed. Some locations were converted into Walmart, Canadian Tire, PetSmart, Dollarama, Winners, H&M, or Lowe's stores afterward. In the end, the failure of Target Canada had racked up losses of over $2.1 billion and is currently known as one of the worst retail failures of all time.
