The Tasman Rugby Union was born in 2006 from the merger of Marlborough and Nelson Bays rugby unions.

On may 2016, the team restored the shark logo and changed its name from "Tasaman Makos" to "Tasman Mako", in order to reflect the plural in Te Reo Maori (Maori language).
