Tata Play is the largest Indian direct-to-home satellite TV provider, and one of the oldest. Launched in August 2006 as Tata Sky, it is jointly owned by Tata and the Star TV network. Star was originally owned by 21st Century Fox and hence was a sister company of Sky. Though Sky was acquired by Comcast in 2018, Tata Sky remained with 21st Century Fox until 20 March 2019, when it (including Star TV (now Disney Star)) was acquired by The Walt Disney Company.

The Tata Sky brand nevertheless remained until 26 January 2022, when it was officially rebranded as Tata Play, while retiring the Sky logo and brand identity. Its competitors are Airtel Digital TV, Sun Direct, Dish TV/d2h and the state-owned DD Free Dish.

Launched:  26 January 2022

On 26 January 2022, the 72nd Indian Republic Day, Tata Sky officially rebranded to Tata Play to better position itself as a triple-play telecommunications and content company, offering satellite TV, broadband Internet and over-the-top streaming services. At the same time, the Sky brand has been dropped for the first time since its launch in 2006, amid reports that The Walt Disney Company is preparing to exit the DTH business later in 2022, thereby giving the Tata Group full control of the company.

The corporate identity consists of the A in the Play logo acting as a play button, with the corporate colours being violet and pink. It has been designed by London-based design agency venturethree, which has worked with Disney Star, the part-owner of the then-Tata Sky, in the early 2010s. The corporate typeface is Volte Play, a customised version of the Volte font by Indian Type Foundry.
