Telecinco was founded on 10 March 1989 as Tele 5, but did not officially launch until 3 March 1990.

In 1997, Tele 5 renamed itself to Telecinco, with the logo dropping the flower; the only Mediaset-owned channel to do so. In 2017, investigations by the press discovered that the circle in the logo is actually supposed to be an iris, with original sketches provided by Ángel Luis Sánchez having envisioned the circle and bottom of the number '5' as half of an eye.

In late August 2024, Telecinco announced a new graphic presentation, with a "day mode" colour scheme to be used until 21:05, and a "night mode", which is used after the nightly broadcast of Informativos Telecinco. The rebrand was officially launched on September 2, 2024.
