Telenor India started as a joint venture in 2009 between Telenor and Unitech, a real estate company, under the name of Uninor. Unitech pulled out of the joint venture in 2012, leading Telenor to acquire a 100% stake.
Due to a perennially low market share, and the rapid consolidation in the Indian telecoms industry unleashed by the latest competitor, Jio, Telenor found it unviable to continue in India and sold its network to Bharti Airtel in 2018.
