In 2013, Telenor was one of two successful applicants to be awarded a licence to operate in Myanmar, the other being Ooredoo of Qatar, thus breaking the monopoly of the state-owned MPT. Telenor received its licence in February 2014, then first launched services in Yangon, Mandalay and Naypyitaw (the capital) in September, and finally launched countrywide services in October along with Ooredoo (Myanmar).
Later, in 2018, a fourth telecom operator, Mytel, was launched by Viettel of Vietnam.
