Since February 1, 1969, the Chilean public television broadcaster Televisión Nacional de Chile operates regional programming for the Magallanes region under the name Televisión Nacional de Chile Red Austral (or simply the Red Austral). It is the oldest of the 9 regional feeds of the broadcaster's TVN Regiones subdivision, since unlike other feeds, the region's geographical position forced the broadcaster to make a special feed for it (which included a regional newscast and a 1-week delay for most other programs).

On 26 May 1978, the regional feed launched the Estación Terrena Punta Arenas which allowed a satellite connection with the main feed (initially just a 15-minute connection with the 60 Minutos newscast). By 1983, the Red Austral was receiving most programs live through the Estación Terrena Punta Arenas (though regional programming was kept).
