“The Shield logo was introduced in April 2003 .
Since the North Charles Street Design Organization brought the identity mark to the College as an unsolicited suggestion, the initial design did not cost the College anything. The design was presented to college committees and groups that included students. It was extremely well received and it was decided that the College would contract NCSDO to refine the identity mark and develop design applications (such as stationery designs, signage, parking decals, etc.) and a graphic standards manual with usage guidelines. The complete cost of these services was $15,000, and the purchasing was completed before the College had ever learned of possible budget cuts... The recommendation that the College adopt a new visual identity came out of a process which included input (in the way of focus groups, forums, and meetings) with current students, faculty, staff, prospective students, alumni, and outside influencers such as legislators. The recommendation was included in the Integrated Marketing Report which was completed by the marketing firm, Lipman Hearne. The clock-tower logo was not a distinct visual identity for the College. A tower image as part of a logo is typical of many other colleges and universities, including several in the state of New Jersey.” |

The new TCNJ seal incorporates elements of the old Trenton State College seal.
“While the Trenton State shield contained one book, the new seal contains two, representing the liberal arts and the professions, which are taught with equal depths of quality at TCNJ. Both shields contain suns and have a lion—the symbol of our school—perched atop. While the TSC seal contained one star, the new seal contains three to represent New Jersey, the third state in the union.”
