The Times of India (abbr. TOI) is India's national daily newspaper. The first edition of the paper was published on November the 3rd, 1838, as a semiweekly The Bombay Times and Journal of Commerce, under the editorship of ND Velkar. In 1850 under George Buist, the paper became a daily, and in 1861, under Robert Knight, it changed the masthead to the current name. It is one of India's oldest and largest daily newspaper in terms of circulation, the other being The Hindu, the Hindustan Times and The Indian Express. It is owned and managed by The Times Group (Bennett, Coleman & Company Ltd.), the largest media conglomerate in India. The paper maintained its centre-right editorial stance since India's independence.
