In 1998, after a merger between its parent company, PolyGram Music Group and MCA Music Entertainment to become Universal Music Group, PolyGram Records Philippines changed its name to MCA Music, Inc. As UMG started to phasing out the MCA name in 2003, it was retained on legal purposes because of a trademark dispute with an unrelated label known as Universal Records. However, the company started to adopt the "MCA/Universal" name to simplify its identification, while they adopted Universal Music Philippines as its international name.
