The channel that is today's USA Network was launched on September 22, 1977 as the Madison Square Garden Sports Network (not to be confused with the similarily-named New York City-area regional sports network now simply known as the MSG Network).

On April 9, 1980, Madison Square Garden Sports Network was rebranded as the USA Network. The typeface used is Futura Extra Bold for "USA", and the word "Network" was Helvetica.
