The first version of Ubuntu was released on October 20, 2004, with this logo. The logo is meant to symbolise freedom, collaboration, precision and reliability. This logo is still used in a tile in the gnome-mahjongg game in the distro.

The new logo was released alongside Ubuntu Lucid Lynx (10.04). It puts the graphical part of the previous logo in a circle, and changes the typeface to 'Ubuntu'. This logo still used on official website until Early 2024.

In 2022, another new logo was revealed, with the "Circle of Friends" being redesigned and put in a rectangle, the wordmark was made thinner and the wordmark has its U capitalized.
