The new logo was released alongside Ubuntu GNOME Wily Werewolf (15.10). It replaced GNOME logo in the circle with its' own graphical part.
After mainline Ubuntu team announced that Ubuntu will move from Unity to the GNOME 3 desktop starting by version 18.04, Ubuntu GNOME was discontinued.
