2024 (prelaunch)[]
On April 18, 2024, the NHL approved the establishment of an expansion team located in Salt Lake City, using the assets of the currently inactive Arizona Coyotes that were sold to Smith Entertainment Group (owners of the Utah Jazz). The team is expected to begin play within the 2024-25 season, with a proper name and logo being implemented before then.

On June 17, 2024, the NHL and Smith Entertainment Group announced that the relocated franchise would be known as the Utah Hockey Club for its inaugural 2024-25 season; the team plans to implement a permanent name and logo in time for the 2025–26 season that will be chosen via fan vote.
