VTV1 is the flagship channel that was owned and operated by State-owned Vietnam Television. It is the news, politics and general channel. It was the first broadcast on 7 September 1970 as Vietnam Wireless Television under Voice of Vietnam.

On 18 June 1977, the Wireless Television editorial board was separated from Voice of Vietnam and became Vietnam Central Television.

On 30 April 1977, Vietnam Central Television was renamed Vietnam Television.

On 1 January 1990, Vietnam Television started using the three letters "VTV" to abbreviate for Vietnam Television.

On 2 July 1994, Programme One was renamed to VTV1.
1995–1998[]
On 15 April 1995, the VTV1 logo changed its logos. The three colours are red V, green T, cyan V, and red number 1.

On 13 February 1998, the colours of the logo were adjusted.
2008–2013[]
On 2 February 2010, the VTV1 logo was modified again, with the V becoming arrow-shaped and the right-hand T being shaped like a triangle.
2013–present[]
On 1 January 2013, the corners of the logo became rounded.
