The station originally began as WTVP in 1953 as a ABC affiliate. The station was owned by the Prarie Broadcasting Company of Decatur.
1957–1964[]
In 1958, the station was sold to a Chicago-based group and was sold again two years later to Metromedia.
WAND (-TV)[]
1964–1966[]
In 1964, the station was renamed to WAND-TV. In 1965, Prarie Broadcasting merged with LIN Broadcasting which led to channel 17 becoming LIN's first ever television property. And the call letters for WTVP took over the PBS station in Peoria in 1971.

WAND and WICD/WICS switched networks on September 5, 2005 which led to channel 17 joining NBC and channels 15 and 20 joining ABC. In 2007, LIN transferred control of channel 17 to Block Communications.
